Complete Guide to China-Europe Railway Express Container Loading and Photo Requirements

With the advantages of stable transit times and moderate costs, the China-Europe Railway Express has become the preferred logistics method for an increasing number of foreign trade enterprises exporting to Europe. However, railway transport has much stricter container loading requirements than sea freight. If loading is not done properly, at best you may be required to reinforce the cargo; at worst, you may be forced to unpack and reload at the border crossing, with all costs borne by the shipper. Today we will explain all the loading and photography requirements once and for all.

Weight Limits

Different container types have different weight requirements. Overweight is an absolute red line:

Note: The weights above refer to cargo weight + packaging weight, excluding the container’s own weight. Railways are extremely strict about overweight checks — if a weighbridge reveals excess weight, the shipment will be refused.

Balance Requirements

Railway transport balance requirements follow the 70% rule:

  • Longitudinal balance: The weight distribution between the front and rear of the cargo inside the container must not deviate by more than 30% of the total weight
  • Lateral balance: The weight distribution between the left and right sides of the cargo inside the container must not deviate by more than 30% of the total weight

Simply put, you cannot stack all the heavy goods at one end or on one side. Otherwise, the train is prone to unbalanced loading during high-speed operation, creating safety hazards.

Height Limits

Cargo height must be 2-6 cm below the upper edge of the container door frame. This requirement ensures:

  • Smooth door opening and closing operations
  • Proper gripping by railway loading and unloading equipment
  • The container door will not get jammed due to cargo expansion or shifting

Securing Requirements

Railway transport involves significantly more vibration and impact than sea freight, so securing must be thorough:

  • Wooden bracing: Use wooden support pieces to fill gaps between cargo and container walls
  • Lashing straps: Use high-strength lashing straps to secure cargo to anchor points inside the container
  • Filling materials: Fill gaps with air bags, foam boards, etc., to prevent cargo from shifting
  • Corner protection: Add protective corner boards at cargo edges to prevent damage

Door Area Requirements

The container door area must have 1-2 meters of clear space reserved, sealed off with a barricade panel (fence board):

  • This space serves as the operational area for railway loading and unloading
  • If cargo is stacked up to the door, cargo collapse is highly likely when opening the container
  • The barricade panel must be firmly installed and cannot rely on the cargo itself for support

Photography Requirements (at least 6 photos)

After loading is complete, photos must be taken as required for record-keeping. Photos are key evidence for claims and dispute resolution:

  1. Empty container photo: Photo of the empty container interior before loading, showing the container number and condition
  2. Half-loaded photo: Photo taken when cargo is halfway loaded, showing the stacking method
  3. Full container photo: Panoramic shot taken from the container door looking inward after all cargo is loaded
  4. Door reinforcement photo: Close-up of the barricade/fence panel after installation
  5. Seal photo: Close-up of the container seal after closing the door, clearly showing the seal number
  6. Exterior photos: One photo each of the front and side of the container exterior, showing the container number

Photography tips: Ensure adequate lighting and clear images. The container number or seal number must be visible in the photos. Blurry photos are invalid.

Border Transshipment Risks

The China-Europe Railway Express must pass through border crossings (such as Erenhot, Alashankou, Khorgos) before exiting the country. Because Chinese railways and overseas railways use different track gauges, containers must undergo transshipment at the crossing:

  • During transshipment, containers are lifted and transferred, which involves significant impact forces
  • If loading is not done properly, cargo shifting and collapse are highly likely during transshipment
  • Once the crossing authorities determine that loading is non-compliant, forced unpacking and re-securing will be required
  • All resulting unpacking fees, securing fees, storage fees, and delay fees are borne by the shipper

Differences Between Domestic and International Segments

It is important to note that the loading standards for domestic railway transport and international railway through transport in China are not entirely the same:

  • Domestic segment: Some routes enforce relatively lenient standards
  • International segment: Full compliance with international railway through transport standards, with stricter requirements

For cargo shipped via the China-Europe Railway Express, it is recommended to load according to international segment standards from the start to avoid being required to make corrections at the border.
